原文

Instead of lying awake worrying, we’re often told to “sleep on it” when making big or small decisions.

There’s actually a scientific basis for this advice.

Sleep ____1____ influence our response to emotional situations, and helps us to manage our mental health.

To understand ____2____ sleep and emotions are so connected, it’s important to first understand what happens in the brain when we come across ____3____ emotive.

Two main brain regions interact to create emotional responses.

The first is the limbic system (边缘系统) ____4____ (locate ) deep in our brain.

This acts as our emotion center ____5____ quickly considers a situation to make a judgement about it and helps us to decide how to react.

It helps us react quickly in certain situations—for example, when we come across a dangerous animal.

But most of the time we need to adjust our immediate emotional response.

This is where the second region—the prefrontal cortex (前额皮质)—comes in.

Located just behind our forehead, this region ____6____ (help) us to increase or decrease our emotional responses as necessary.

So if we see a predator (such as a bear) in the zoo, the prefrontal cortex tells us we don’t need to panic ____7____ it’s in a cage.

These regions need to be well-connected ____8____ effectively generate and adjust our emotional responses.

This is where sleep comes in.

When we’re sleep deprived (睡眠不足), the connections between these areas weaken, making the reaction in the limbic system ____9____ (strong).

Sleep loss not only increases our reaction ____10____ stressful events during the day, but it also makes these reactions harder to change.

故填which

7 结合句中“we don’t need to panic”和“it’s in a cage”可知,空后的内容是前文“我们不要恐慌的原因”,所以空处用连接词because“因为”。故填because

10 短语reaction to“对…… 故填to

1 Instead of lying awake worrying, we're often told to "sleep on it" when making big or small decisions.

2 There's actually a scientific basis for this advice.

3 Sleep (can) influence our response to emotional situations, and helps us to manage our mental health.

4 To understand (why) sleep and emotions are so connected, it's important to first understand what happens in the brain when we come across (something) emotive.

5 Two main brain regions interact to create emotional responses.

6 The first is the limbic system (边缘系统)  (located) deep in our brain.

7 This acts as our emotion center (which) quickly considers a situation to make a judgement about it and helps us to decide how to react.

8 It helps us react quickly in certain situations—for example, when we come across a dangerous animal.

9 But most of the time we need to adjust our immediate emotional response.

10 This is where the second region—the prefrontal cortex (前额皮质)—comes in.

11 Located just behind our forehead, this region (helps) us to increase or decrease our emotional responses as necessary.

12 So if we see a predator (such as a bear) in the zoo, the prefrontal cortex tells us we don't need to panic (because) it's in a cage.

13 These regions need to be well-connected (in order to) effectively generate and adjust our emotional responses.

14 This is where sleep comes in.

15 When we're sleep deprived (睡眠不足), the connections between these areas weaken, making the reaction in the limbic system (stronger).

16 Sleep loss not only increases our reaction (to) stressful events during the day, but it also makes these reactions harder to change.
