NTP 分发中包含一些实用的故障排除工具，如ntptrace。jitter表示系统时钟与远程时钟的观测时间误差（以毫秒为单位），是均方根（RMS）时间差的平均值（在 NTPv4 之前，此列称为dispersion）。

ntptrace用于确定给定 NTP 服务器的时间来源，并追溯 NTP 服务器链直至其主时间源。若不带参数运行ntptrace，则从localhost开始。示例输出如下：
